Dear members of Alpine Saskatchewan.
This year, 2019 is the year of the Canada Winter Games. These games happen every 4 years. The games are an opportunity for U-16 athletes from across the country to get together and compete against one another in 21 different sports. The CWG are designed and split over 2 weeks. This year the CWG are being hosted in Red Deer, Alberta from February 15th to March 2nd.
Alpine Skiing, the sport we are all interested in, will be Hosted in the remote village of Kananaskis/Nakiska ski resort. We will be competing in the second half, February 24th to March 2nd. The athletes will be competing in 4 different disciplines, Super-G, GS, SL and Ski Cross. For Ski Cross we will be travelling to Red Deer to race at Canyon Ski Resort.
Alpine Saskatchewan will be sending 7 able bodied athletes and 1 Para Alpine athlete to the games this year. 4 female and 3 male able bodies and 1 male Para. These athletes elite athletes have been working for this for an entire year. Last February the athletes expressed interest along with a coach recomendation letter. From there they began training. First at an identification camp on snow in April 2018 then fitness testing in June. After that the athletes headed to MT Hood Oregon in July for an on snow summer camp, Dry land training and fitness testing every 6-8 weeks leading into our return to snow in Panorama on November 9th – 14th 2018. Training on snow and continued preparations in Saskatchewan until January 9th-10th when we went to Nakiska for the Alberta CWG qualifying race, where we as well did our final team selection. These hard working, dedicated athletes were told the whole way that the amount of effort they put in will dictate the amount of success they get out. We are so proud of all these athletes and how hard they worked to achieve this moment.
